Both, the key and the encrypted picture, are images which look like white noise. But if you print the key on a slide and place it on the encrypted, the combined image resembles the original picture (but there is a loss of contrast). I was told, that this technique is based on an idea of Shamir. See for example http://www.cacr.math.uwaterloo.ca/~dstinson/visual.html for more information about this subject. Note that this is really a toy and no proper cryptographic application. As each pixel is encrypted separately this method is very, very, very vulnerable to a statistical anaylsis. Even if you have only two images, which are encrypted for the same key, you can derive a lot of information about the key.
